The Puppy Rescue Mission.

30 Dec

I just found out about this amazing non-for-profit yesterday and had to get the word out there. The Puppy Rescue Mission is a group of people who help our soldiers get their furry friends back to the USA from the battle fields of Afghanistan. It costs about $4000 to get a dog back to the US and about $3000 to get a cat back. The soldiers pay for as much as they can and then they turn to The Puppy Rescue Mission to help them cover the rest of the expenses.

Having pets on base is strictly prohibited but these men and women go against the rules to save the lives of the street dogs they come in contact with everyday. This is why we need to help them. Not only are they over there fighting an endless war, getting hurt, being separated from their families, they are also showing compassion to some of the most abused street animals, in the world. The horror stories you can read on The Puppy Rescue Website say it all. These street animals are kicked, stoned and beat to death by the Afgan Natives. They lead the most horrible existence until they are killed or starve to death.

As we all know, Afghanistan is not America and what these troops are forced to see on and off the battlefield is heartbreaking. The fact that our soldiers even put their neck on the line for these animals, shows us all how honorable and noble the great men and women that serve our country are. The least we can do is pitch in to save a couple of furry lives and in return enrich the soldiers lives as well. How great would it be for a solider to come home to his furry friend he met in Afghanistan?

So I am almost begging you to click on the link below. I know the holiday season probably wiped a lot of people out monetarily but if you have anything to spare, please consider donating to The Puppy Rescue Mission.

Save The Chimps.

22 Jul

Save The Chimps is the world’s largest sanctuary for chimpanzees who have been rescued from research laboratories, entertainment and from the pet trade. This sanctuary is currently home to almost 300 chimps, some who were subjected to decades of laboratory testing. Located in Florida, Save The Chimps strives to help these magnificent creatures over come their past lives. They do not breed these chimps and they try their best to prevent any reproductions from happening at the sanctuary. Save The Chimps does allow research to be done on the chimps they home but the research must be done from a far and in a non intrusive manner.

The way this sanctuary is set up is simply a-m-a-z-i-n-g. It is made up of 12 islands of grass, palm trees, hills and climbing structures. Each island also has a hurricane proof ‘home’ structure for the chimps to hide out in when it gets thick during storm season. On these islands the chimps are free to live their lives as they please. Kick it with their friends, enjoy a sunset in solitude, whatever they want to do, they can do at Save The Chimps.

Currently Save The Chimps is in need of donations for their ‘special needs’ chimps. As we all know, animal testing is one of the cruelest and inhumane things ever and if these chimps make it through all those years of hell they are left with the scars. Mentally, physically and emotionally. The sanctuary needs to build a separate building to house the chimps who cannot live on the islands with the rest of the crew. They estimate this will cost about $800,000 to accomplish and would give those who suffered at the hands of humans a second chance at life.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue.

31 May

The Sean Casey Animal Rescue is located in Brooklyn,  NY.  I have admired this rescue group from afar for a while now and to me they embody the change that NYC has needed in its animal rescue situation. When I first adopted from the system in NYC 10 years ago it was pretty much death row for anything that got picked up or dropped off at the shelter. Now when I go on rescue groups websites like Sean’s and see all the Pit bulls and Chihuahuas, the 2 most abandoned and abused dogs left to die in shelters in America, up for adoption and getting a second chance, it makes me want to cry tears of joy. In 2010 alone The Sean Casey Animal Rescue group pulled over 2000 animals from the NYC kill shelter system, that is 2000 lives saved.

One average they take in 150 animals each month and in order to keep doing this they need all the financial support they can get. They can also use donations of paper towels, bleach, pillow cases, dish soap, plastic bags and towels. You can drop these items off and meet your new best friend at the address below…

Sean Casey Animal Rescue. 153 East 3rd Street in Brooklyn NY (11218) between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue. Take the F train to Fort Hamilton Parkway, or the B16/B67 buses to Fort Hamilton Parkway. Open Everyday 11am-7pm.

Puppies Behind Bars.

7 May

Puppies Behind Bars is a unique program that joins together prisoners and puppies who have been born to become service and guide dogs for the blind and disabled . Each prisoner who is involved with Puppies Behind Bars is taught how to train and raise these puppies into service dogs. This is no easy task since the training for these dogs takes about 12-18 months to complete and requires lots of attention and love. Once the puppy has been successfully trained they are returned to the school from where they came and are then sent to live with a person/couple/family in need of a guide dog.

For the 16 months they are in the prison the puppies live in the cell with their mates, they attend classes once a week and 2-3 weekends a year they go to ‘puppy sitters’ who bring them into their home to get them used to everyday things they will encounter once they leave the prison. Since some puppies simply don’t have the confidence needed to become guide dogs, they cannot be sent back to the school to be officially certified, there is nothing wrong with these dogs and they still end up being helpful because Puppies Behind Bars donates these dogs to blind children so they can use the skills they honed while in prison. Many of their other dogs will go to disabled war vets who need help once they come back from war.

One cannot help but to be affected by the presence of a puppy, this is why Puppies Behind Bars is not only wonderful for the dogs and the people who are in need of their service but it is also helpful for the prisoners. They are taught skills they can use even when they leave prison, they are made to have responsibility while they are in prison and as any pet owner knows, pets are therapeutic and help them cope with the loneliness and isolation that prison walls bring.

If you are looking to support a charity, look into Puppies Behind Bars, they help all parties involved. Check ’em out below…

Love-A-Stray.

2 Mar

Love-A-Stray is a non-for-profit rescue group who focuses on helping homeless animals. They are not an actual animal shelter just a group of people who foster and adopt out these unwanted animals. They have tons of adoptable cats, kittens and some dogs and puppies as well. Love-A-Stray is currently in dire need of foster homes for their animals and cannot currently accept anymore cats or kittens until the ones they have found their forever homes.

Fostering a dog, cat, puppy or kitten is one of the most kindest things you could ever do. Some fosters only stay a week and some a bit longer, fostering is so important because it allows these rescue groups a free space so they can go and take another animal from death row or off the streets and bring them into the mix. When you foster a pet it comes with food, bowls and all the other goodies so there is a minimal monetary investment on your part, all you need to supply is a warm home and some good loving 🙂

Love-A-Stray hosts adoptions at Petco in Cleveland, Ohio, they post the dates on their website and if you are interested in meeting one of their adoptable animals then simply send them an email and they will arrange a meeting. If you are not in the position to adopt or foster an animal maybe a small donation is more your speed. We all know these are tough times for most people, especially those who are fighting the good fight for these homeless animals. There is no donation too small, even $5 is helpful, that could buy cat litter, some food or some toys and remember your donations are tax deductible.
