MANIC PANIC.

23 Sep

Manic Panic is simply a classic company. People swear by Manic Panic to get the rich and bright hair colors they crave and others of us use it on our face, toes and nails. Anyway you look at it supporting a company like Manic Panic, is a good thing. Started back in 1977 on good old St. Marks in Manhattan, this revolutionary company brought a little bit of punk, rock and glamor to the masses. With only a $500 dollar loan from their mom, Tish and Snooky were determined to make it happen and they did. Here I am 35 years later blogging about them 😉

Manic Panic no longer has a store on St. Marks, they have since moved to Long Island City, Queens and have also opened a second store on Melrose Ave in Hollywood. Manic Panic has remained true to their no animal testing and no animal ingredients policy. They are also involved in many good causes that help both people and animals. Combine those facts with the fact that they make absolutely wonderful cosmetics and you have a force to be reckoned with. If you can’t get to their retail locations you can order whatever you fancy right off their site below…

Shop Here: Vaute Couture.

28 Jul

The amazing high-end, Eco-friendly vegan company, Vaute Couture, has recently opened its flagship store in Brooklyn, New York. If you don’t know about Vaute Couture I will give you a brief run down…Very well made coats for both men and women, all fabrics are Eco friendly and all coats are made by hand here in the USA.  Recently they have also been venturing into other forms of vegan clothing such as dresses and t-shirts which you can peep at their store in Williamsburg. Vaute’s whole store is also vegan and eco-friendly. They used old mannequins from Abercrombie, a wrap desk from Barney’s, left over paint, lockers that were once used at a school and they used old doors from ‘Build It Green’ to create their photo booth and wardrobes.

I own a Vaute Couture winter coat and I LOVE IT SO MUCH that when I moved last month I refused to pack it into a box with my other coats. I actually didn’t even pack it period, it just rode in the back seat of my car that way I could keep my eyes on it to be sure it arrived as perfectly as it departed from my old house. That is the power of  Vaute Couture jacket and I am not the only one who feels like this 😉

Vaute Couture. 234 Grand Street. Btw Driggs Ave and Roebling St. Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC 11211. Open Tuesday-Sunday 1pm-8pm.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue.

31 May

The Sean Casey Animal Rescue is located in Brooklyn,  NY.  I have admired this rescue group from afar for a while now and to me they embody the change that NYC has needed in its animal rescue situation. When I first adopted from the system in NYC 10 years ago it was pretty much death row for anything that got picked up or dropped off at the shelter. Now when I go on rescue groups websites like Sean’s and see all the Pit bulls and Chihuahuas, the 2 most abandoned and abused dogs left to die in shelters in America, up for adoption and getting a second chance, it makes me want to cry tears of joy. In 2010 alone The Sean Casey Animal Rescue group pulled over 2000 animals from the NYC kill shelter system, that is 2000 lives saved.

One average they take in 150 animals each month and in order to keep doing this they need all the financial support they can get. They can also use donations of paper towels, bleach, pillow cases, dish soap, plastic bags and towels. You can drop these items off and meet your new best friend at the address below…

Sean Casey Animal Rescue. 153 East 3rd Street in Brooklyn NY (11218) between Fort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue. Take the F train to Fort Hamilton Parkway, or the B16/B67 buses to Fort Hamilton Parkway. Open Everyday 11am-7pm.

Top 10 Cities For Veggie Travelers.

8 May

Everyone loves a vacation, so why not head to one of these veg friendly cities next time your in the market? New people, new places and plenty of vegetarian food to boot. Sounds good right? Read on to figure out which of these 1o cities you should book your next flight to…

*this is a Frommers list not a VeggieFitness complied list but since you all rock and tell me whats up we are 4 cities away from compiling our own, so please keep on sharing you cities, spots and places with us so we can get our own list on 🙂

10 Best Cities For Vegetarian Travelers:

1- London, England. London was voted PETA’s most vegetarian friendly city in the world so it comes as no surprise that it lands on this list. London is a front runner in the veg food scene with tons of restaurants to choose from, veg take-out options and even full veg boutique produce stores.

2- Singapore. Since tofu is a diet staple in Singapore it is easy for veg heads to get their protein in while vacationing there. A large Southern Indian population also brings tons of vegetarian Indian restaurants to this island country.

3- San Francisco, California. Some say that San Fran started the veg movement here in the USA back in the 1960’s. You can argue that all you want but you cannot argue that San Fran is an amazing city to find any and everything in the vegan/vegetarian food categories.

4- Taipei, Taiwan. You are in luck if you visit Taipei because there are literally hundreds of vegetarian restaurants to eat at in this city. Keep an eye out for the swastikas, that is the symbol for Buddhist or Taoist vegetarian food. Swastikas in Taipei=Good food.

5- Portland, Oregon. Portland is a city known for it’s interest in healthy and sustainable living so having it on this list is a natural. They have tons of veg restaurants, stores, bakeries including some fair trade eats and food stores.

6- New York, NY. It is easy to be veg in this city and with it’s diverse population of people and cultures you can get any cuisine you fancy in veg form. From vegan fast food to vegan soft serve ice cream, NYC has it all.

7- Chiang Ming, Thailand. This city located in Northern Thailand is home to an eclectic mix of cultures they combine to make their delicious vegetarian staples. To identify vegetarian restaurants look for yellow banners bearing a single character. ‘Jay’ means vegetarian.

8- Vancouver, British Columbia. 1 of out of 10 Canadians identifies themselves as vegetarian so it is no surprise that they got some love on this list. Vancouver is home to a seriously up and coming veg scene.

9- Jerusalem, Israel. Kosher is the key for vegetarians visiting this city. Jerusalem is home to many ‘milk based’ kosher vegetarian restaurants. This means no animal oils, meats, fats are served and your food, utensils and the kitchen it is cooked in, have never been exposed to meat.

10- Mumbai, India. Since Indian is home to the biggest vegetarian population in the world, of course Mumbai is on the list. Most veg heads in Indian are down with dairy but they do not eat eggs, meat, fish. You can easily find vegetarian food options any and everywhere you go in this city.

Restaurant Review: Pure City.

14 Feb

Pure City Vegetarian Restaurant is located in the small Hudson Valley New York town of Pine Bush. Pine Bush is really a small town and to be honest one of the last places I would have even imagined to find a vegetarian restaurant. To make it even cooler, Pure City is located right next to a health foods store which carries tons of vegan and vegetarian goodies, foods and supplies. It’s like a two-for-one 🙂

Anyways, I am a huge fan of Pure City and every time we go to visit Sandy (aka Mom) I’m like ‘Can we eat a Pure City?’ I’m sure its annoying but I can’t help it, their food is sooo darn good. Every time I have eaten there I have loved it, everything is fresh down to the homemade ketchup. The menu includes lots of Chinese and Asian inspired dishes, as well as veggie burgers, fries, nuggets and salads. They also have mochi for dessert and to be honest the mochi is the bomb so be sure to save some room for those frozen bundles of vegan goodness. I personally could eat their Sweet and Sour ‘Chicken’ every time I am there and about 90% of the time I do. It is so good, one of the best versions of Sweet and Sour I have had and trust me I have tried many different versions from North American to Europe.

Pure City is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11am-10pm. Friday and Saturday from 11am-11pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. They are located at 100 Main St. Pine Bush, New York and you can contact them at: 845.744.8888/2153. Regardless of what you order at Pure City you can rest assure that you meal will be 100% vegan with no cholesterol, no saturated fat and low in sodium. The service will be great and you will leave happy, they are not rated ‘The Best Of Hudson Valley’ for nothing 😉
