It’s A Queens Thing.

30 Nov

qu

Queens, New York holds a special place in my heart, in fact I know for fact that I am who I am because I lived, worked, loved and breathed in Queens. Jersey made me but Queens molded me.

I LOVE QUEENS.

So when I read that PS 244 in Queens was the first public school in the US to go full veg, it made my lips smile and my heart sing.

What started as a 3 day a week experiment has now turned into a full-time situation. All meals served at PS 244 are vegetarian and the kids are down. In fact they took it from a 3 day menu to a 5 day menu because they noticed that the children where actually gravitating towards the vegetarian meals.

PS 244 is an elementary school that deals with Pre-K thru 3rd Grade. How rad is it that these little ones are being exposed to vegetarian eating at least once a day? At school to boot. I think this is very bad ass and I applaud everyone involved. Including these kids who have shown to have stellar taste in food.

The best part of this story is that once the vegetarian diet was implemented at school, amazing results followed. Not only did attendance approve, teachers saw a jump in energy and excitement in the kids, as well as better focus and attention spans. And just when you think it couldn’t get any better, their test results improved, all across the board.

In addition to their vegetarian lunches, the students of PS 244 also take weekly nutrition classes that teach them about healthy eating. In 1 semester the obesity rates of the children in the school dropped 2% and these days the children go home and teach their parents about healthy eating.

I cannot get behind anything more than I can get behind this. Beautiful all around.

Saving the planet, saving the children, saving the animals and saving some coin.

Kind Gift Idea: The WWF Gift Catalog.

3 Dec

wwf

Does anyone else remember when W.W.F stood for ‘World Wresting Federation’? My goodness those were the days, chase some W.W.F with a bit of G.L.O.W. and it was the perfect 80’s Sunday after church 😉

The W.W.F. were dishin’ about today is the World Wildlife Federation. Not a small group by any means, the W.W.F. works hard to help, conserve and save the animals that inhabit this wonderful planet. Lucky for us who partake in the Holiday festivities, WWF offers super cute gift packages that help different animals at different levels. You can spend anywhere from $25 to $1000’s but most gift sets run $25, $50 and $100. This was my ‘go-to’ for Holiday Gifts last year. I ‘adopted’ an animal for every kid on my list last Holiday Season. I went this route instead of running around like crazy to buy them stuff they did’t need.

Options vary but most packages come with a picture of the animal you adopt, a certificate of adoption and a bit of info about the animals and why they need our help. Chimps, dolphins, big cats, primates even fish and sea life are available, there is truly an animal for everyone in this catalog. You can also ‘build your own bucket’ as a gift, so you can include all of your receiver’s favorite animals if you so desire.

Personally, I like giving stuff like this as gifts. Not only is it a good cause but it is educational. It is important for children to know about the animals that we live among and how they need to be cared for and looked after. If you are not into the Holidays, you can still donate, join and help WWF.

Excuse My French?

13 Feb
English: Stop sign in Quebec Français : Pannea...

Here in the USA we tend to look to the French for advice about a lot of things. From fashion to weight loss, we seem to think that France has all the answers for our problems. Well it turns out that France has a couple of its own problems that luckily, we do not have here in America. The issue I am here to complain about today is the fact that the country of France has banned all and any vegetarian/vegan meals in their schools. Pretty freakin lame huh?

This new law states that all protein options given at French schools must be in the form of meat or dairy. If a child chooses to use the cheese as their source of protein then they must also eat another serving of dairy, a yogurt, to fulfill their new lunch requirements. None of this is all that shocking considering that France is a country that is known to LOVE eating meat. From rabbit to duck, kids in France eat it all and it seems as if the government is stead fast on not breaking ‘tradition’. But are they not concerned with all that saturated fat in the meat and dairy they are forcing their kids to eat?

The French have long been bowed down to for their ability to stay slim yet eat diets full of meat, cheese and wine, the French also have the highest cholesterol rates in all of Europe, around 250. Here in America we hover around 200. Both are high but you see where I am going with this. France is also a ‘Free Country’, as we are, yet they are enforcing something like this? Seems kind of misplaced in their society if you ask me, the French have always been seen as ‘progressive’ with their views on marriage, child rearing and of course fashion. What about kids who can’t eat meat for health reasons? Religious reasons? Moral reasons? I mean what a bad position to put children and their families in, it really is such a shame 😦

I don’t think a vegetarian diet every killed anyone but we all know a meat based one sure has.

Trader Joe’s Breaded Chickenless Nuggets.

28 Nov

I am always skeptical when it comes to trying mock ‘meats’. I am so picky that I tend to not like 90% of the things I try, perhaps this is why it took me over 2 years to finally try these ‘Breaded Chickenless Nuggets’ from Trader Joe’s. Last week I decided to give them a whirl and right away I noticed that they look nothing like the ones on the front of the box. Confusion set in but my hunger prevailed.

They cooked up super easy in the oven in about 15 minutes and they came out perfectly crispy. They reminded me of Veggie Patch’s mock chicken nuggets, light yet crispy with no nasty soy after taste. There is not much taste to these little guys but the texture is right on. It’s better off something be a bit bland as opposed to over spiced and salted in my book. Being a bit bland is nothing some buffalo sauce can’t cure 😉

All in all these little guys are a good deal. They are easy to make on those nights when cooking an actual meal is just not an option. I have the palate of a child so I think would be safe to say kids would totally dig these. Plus they are not bad for you, they are all natural and with only 130 calories per serving (4 nuggets) you manage to get 12 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber.

The Truth.

When it comes to belts, finding ones of the vegan kind can be rather tricky cuz lets face it, most belts are made from leather. The ones that are not usually trend more on the casual side of the game which doesn’t help all of my ‘business hippies’ out there ($10 if you can name the movie that ‘nickname’ is from). This is where Vegetarian Belts swoops in to save the day 🙂

Run by the Truth Company, these belts are the BOMB. For real. They have something for everyone from kids to adults, men and woman a like. They cover all bases from casual to business and of course they are all cruelty free. No leather. No suede. They even offer a couple of eco-friendly belts, 1 made from hemp and one made from jute. There are also 2 nickle-free versions for those who are allergic to that particular metal.  You can order whatever you fancy right off their website, shipping is free for orders of $60 or more and their shipping rates for anything below $60 are extremely fair.

Truth is the real deal, the owner of the company Renia Pruchnicki started this business all on her own 10 years ago. She actually used to make all of the products herself in her apartment. Then the demand grew and here we are. Truth has won many awards for their style and vision and PETA named them the ‘Best Leather Replacement Clothing Company In North America.’  Check out everything they have to offer below…
