If You Think I’m Pompus and You Think I’m Bitchy…

11 Nov

The title is totally meant to be read in tune with Rod Stewart’s ‘If You Want My Body.’

Now that we got that cleared up let’s clear up the rest.

I don’t know if I ever addressed the fact that I struggled with my weight and my health for a long time before I became a vegetarian.

But I did. For 27 years and 7 months.

So if I come across bitchy at all know that I am not. I have simply already walked a lifetime in your shoes.

I struggled with my weight, hard. I am 5’4′ and at one point I weighed 180lbs.

I ate HORRIBLE ‘food’ and battled depression which was only exasperated by my awful eating habits.

I drank A LOT, everyday. For years.

I did hard drugs, lots of them too. For years.

Long and short, I was a mess, my life was a mess and never in my life would I have made the choice to go vegetarian. And never in my life did I think going vegetarian would save it.

To sum it up, on February 16th, 2008 I had what some would call a ‘divine intervention’.

I was out to dinner and I was eating chicken mole at a very nice Mexican restaurant.

During dinner I got cold and felt a presence about 4-6 feet above my head, I was then delivered a message that was told to me from above. It was spoken down to me, not in my ear.

The message stated : ‘This is the last time you will ever eat meat.’

I did not hear a voice, only the words.

I TOTALLY IGNORED IT, GOT FREAKED OUT, DIDN’T SAY ANYTHING, DIDN’T TELL ANYONE…

And woke up February 17th, 2008 as a vegetarian.

Since that day I have stopped battling my weight, my depression, my early on set arthritis (I played soccer and basketball hard) and my bad eating habits.

Obviously the hard drinking and hard drugs have flew the coop as well.

My thought process, the way I view the world, the way I view life and the way I view myself have all changed.

Changes I now wonder if I would have been strong enough to have had made on my own.

I don’t think I would have.

I don’t think I would have ‘seen the light’, I was blessed enough to be ‘shown’ it.

So that is my story and that is why I share.

Because being a vegetarian took me from a egotistical, over weight, depressed, alcoholic to a humble, blessed, compassionate and kind human being.

Which is probably who I really always was but my poor choices did not allow my goodness to shine.

Becoming a vegetarian saved my life and if sharing this helps save one more, my job here is done.

Stay Chizzle,

M.

Ps. And let it be known that I am not what one would call a religious person.

But 7 is the God Number.

I was 27 years and 7 months old when I received myΒ  ‘intervention’.

2+7+7=16

1+6=7.

Makes you think, huh?

Natural Born Veg Heads.

17 Oct

Ok, so in my family there are 4 kids, 3 girls followed by a boy. All 3 girls are vegetarians, all 3 girls never really liked eating meat or drinking milk. In fact, there were some intense battles at the dinner table about meat and milk. Gross. I can so laugh about it now but when I was 12 I didn’t find it to be so humorous, nor did my parents. So what’s the beef though? Were we just born like this? Do we have our parents to thank, or what?

Research has shown us that some people simply do not like the taste of meat. They are attributing this to a keen sense of smell that makes them go ‘Ewe’. A study in Norway came to the conclusion that about 70% of people have two functional copies of a gene linked to an odor receptor that detects a compound in male mammals called androstenone, which is common in meat such as pork. Those people who have the two functional copies of the gene think that meat smells quite bad. This could be precisely why you don’t like meat and probably have never liked meat.

This was only one study done but I had to post about it after I spoke with my mother today. She said something about ‘not liking the smell of meat cooking’ which got me to thinking. I am very sensitive to smell as is my mom and my sisters. This would make sense as to why the 3 of us never really liked meat nor had a hard time giving it up. We get it from our Momma.

So the moral of the story is; maybe you were just born to be a vegetarian πŸ™‚

Annette Larkins: The Ageless Woman.

27 Sep

I came across Annette and her story quite sometime ago and just had to share it because I think it speaks volumes. Annette Larkins is 70 years young, that is her in the picture above. No really, that is a 70 year old woman. A 70 year old woman who takes no medication, gets up at 5:30am everyday, grows and tends her own gardens and just so happens to be a raw vegetarian. Many are saying she is vegan but she does use honey so I guess that would make her vegetarian. But anyways that is just a minor detail, now onto the bigger picture.

Annette went vegetarian back in the 1960’s while her husband owned a butcher shop. She first went vegetarian then went raw and no unfortunately her husband did not follow suit. Neither did her girlfriends. Today her husband of 54 years is on several medications for aliments such as high cholesterol and high blood pressure. Amos does not have the energy Annette does and he is constantly in awe of his wife. Her friends all look at her now and say how they wished they had followed her nutrition advice all those years ago. I too would be kicking my own ass if I looked 70 and my veg head bff looked 50. Annette’s healthy lifestyle has had such an impact on her appearance, she is a size 4, that people think she is her husbands daughter, even his granddaughter, when they go out together. Ouch. Score one for the veg life πŸ™‚

So as you see, getting older should not be a burden and I don’t think it should be looked as one either. All we ever hear about is how our bodies are going to fail us when we get old and that we will all get fat, blah, blah, blah. I have always thought that to be total nonsense. Sure some good genes and a bit of luck always help but diet and lifestyle trump all. Why be all hunched over at 70, sick on meds, when you can look fly and healthy like Annette does?

October 1st Is World Vegetarian Day.

25 Sep

Since October is vegetarian awareness month it is only appropriate that October 1st is World Vegetarian Day. The North American Vegetarian Society is offering up gifts and prizes to those who choose to go meat free for the month of October. You can get all the details on their website below, they have outreach materials you can hand out, participation forms etc.

I encourage everyone to go vegetarian for at least 1 day, October 1st but I would like you non-vegetarians to consider taking the whole month off of meat. They say it only takes 22 days to establish a new routine and to break an old habit. Why not use these 31 months in October to get your health, mind and fitness right by going vegetarian? I know that the word vegetarian always gets boiled down to food but the lifestyle is so much bigger than that. Being vegetarian is not only good for you but great for the planet and of course for the animals. Now take these 31 days and make the change πŸ˜‰

Off The Meat (Rack).

Red and Meth have dropped some of the greatest hip hop records ever. From Muddy Waters to Tical, the 90’s were all about East Coast Hip Hip and Redman and Method Man were at the forefront. Over the years they have lost nothing in terms of talent and fire. If anything they have gotten better with age, their last record Blackout 2 showed a more mature duo with flows of seasoned vets. I had pleasure of seeing them live a couple years back and to say the killed it would be putting it mildly.

Anyways enough about my opinions, lets get to the facts. Redman and Method Man are the ish. These two have been friends since they were youngins and then they reconnected in 1994 and even better in 1995 spit verses on the legendary TuPac track ‘Got My Mind Made Up’. In fact Meth is the only artist to ever do a track with both Biggie and TuPac in the flesh. Combined they have sold millions of records, made a movie, shot a tv show and even did some commercials. As a die hard fan of theirs, I think the best thing they have ever done is gone vegetarian. A couple years back the boys made the change and officially crowned themselves, ‘ some of the coolest people in the world’ as if they were not already. Redman has lost weight since McDonalds is no longer an option and instead he chomps on some endamame and Meth is all about the faux meat options and veggie burger selections that Whole Foods carries.

So here is some peer pressure…everyone is doing it, all the cool kids are doing it and you should too. I mean seriously, yesterday we talk about McDonalds doing it, today we talk about talented hip hop artists doing it, last month it was athletes doing it. Everyone is doing it. This is the only time in my 32 years that I will tell people to ‘say yes to peer pressure’ because these days the pressure is to go veg πŸ˜‰

When In Ghent…

Graslei in Ghent, Belgium

Beautiful Ghent, Belgium Where Every Thursday Is 'Veggie Day'

Do as the Belgians do. Literally. Please. Well at least on Thursdays πŸ˜‰ The city of Ghent which is in the BEAUTIFUL, AWESOME country of Belgium has made every Thursday ‘Veggie Day’. This means that everyone eats vegetarian every Thursday. Sounds good to me.

Ghent is doing this for many reasons…’Good for the environment, good for your health and good for your taste buds’ is what Government Officials are saying about this program which started in 2009. The city of Ghent is concerned that their people eat too much meat and not enough fruits and other healthy foods. Kind of sounds like the same situation we have here in the U.S., but Ghent is being proactive and for this I give them snaps.Β  The city officials seem to know that a vegetarian based diet will help lower their population of people with cancers, high cholesterol and obesity and they are ready to make sure their people know this.Β  To help this transition day thrive, the city of Ghent has handed out lists of vegetarian restaurants and easy to make vegetarian recipes. I really wish AT LEAST one city here in the USA would start one of these programs. We are WAY overdue, and with our health and obesity situation in this country it could not hurt… only help.

Since 1/5 of ALL Greenhouse gases come from the production of meat. We have to applaud and look up to the city of Ghent for helping to make our planet a better place. It is nice to see that there are some politicians in office who truly care about our precious world and all the creatures on it. I found it to be even more rad that the city trickled this law down to the schools where children will also be served vegetarian food on ‘Veggie Day’. Other cities in Belgium are said to be following suit.
