“When I see bacon, I see a pig, I see a little friend, and that’s why I can’t eat it. Simple as that.”

And Steve, that’s why you are the mo-fo man.

My Favorite Famous Vegetarian Family.

13 Apr

It is safe to say that I am a pretty hard core Beastie Boys fan and I have been for a long time. I LOVE THE B-BOYS!!! They are just one of those groups, that to me, does not put out junk music. They are extremely talented musicians and come across as ‘Down-To-Earth’ kind of guys. So now I come to find out, I not only like Mike D. the rapper and musician, I am also forming a mild obsession with his whole family. His whole vegetarian family that is. No need to worry, I am not a stalker and will not show up at your kids school. Promise 😉

Married since 1993, Mike D and Tamra Davis are kind of the ish. And yeah Mike D is well, Mike D but Tamra is no slouch herself. This director is the woman behind the lens of some hilarious movies and show such as, ‘CB4’, ‘Half Baked’, ‘My Name Is Earl’, ‘Everybody Hates Chris’ and ‘Billy Madison’ just to name a few. The yoga practicing couple are parents to 2 son’s Davis and Skyler, they health of their children and what they eat is what prompted Tamra to start her online cooking show called ‘The Tamra Davis Cooking Show’. Her vegetarian cooking show teaches you how to make kid approved, healthy vegetarian recipes. But don’t worry its not just for kids. As if that was not enough, she also has a cookbook out called  ‘Make Me Something Good To Eat.’ So see, you have to agree that this vegetarian family rocks thru and thru 😉

So here is a big up from Veggie Fitness to the Davis-Diamond household for passing on the health and compassion of a vegetarian lifestyle to your 2 adorable children. Rock On.

Ricky. Ricky. Ricky.

15 Mar

At age 34, Ricky Williams was one of the oldest players in the NFL when he resigned last month. His outstanding career includes over 10,000 yards rushed, a feat only 26 players have ever achieved. His outstanding NFL career was powered by plants. That’s right, Ricky Williams, is a vegetarian.

Since going vegetarian Ricky says he lost 20 pounds of junk weight, he feels lighter, quicker and as if his body is in proper working order. I must agree with this statement because as we all know, once one switches to a plant-based diet, the body does indeed under go a shift, a very positive one. Ricky believes in a holistic lifestyle including natural healing, meditation and yoga. He is a certified yoga instructor and has actually taught free yoga classes in Toronto while he was playing in the football league in Canada.

As an active supporter of PETA, Ricky has even hosted a ‘Chicken Wing’ taste and eating competition in Miami with PETA. He taste tested the veg chicken wings on the market and let the people know which one he thought was the best. Since his retirement last month, William has stated that he is grateful for the wonderful experience he had in the NFL and he is excited to start his life after football. No matter Ricky chooses to do, we know he will do it with the utmost compassion and respect for the planet and all of its furry friends 🙂

English: Chicago Bulls Dennis Rodman 1995 - 19...

Image via Wikipedia

Being that the 90’s are the decade that has influenced my life the most, it should come to no surprise that I am a fan of Dennis Rodman. Don’t get it twisted, I was always a Knicks fan at the core but back in the day when NY and Chicago were always going head-to-head it was hard for me to not love the Bulls too. I mean they had Jordan, Pippen, Armstrong and Rodman, they were always a great team to watch. Too bad we never won a championship against them. Anyways back to the lecture at hand, Dennis Rodman, NBA Champion, recent inductee to the NBA Hall Of Fame, New Jersey native and long time vegetarian. That’s right folks, while Dennis was collection those 5 championship rings with the Bulls and Pistons he was doing so without the assistance of any meat. Score one for compassion 😉

Raised by a house full of women, Dennis was always more in tune with his feelings and emotions than most of the other boys.  He was a shy and introverted child who was unhappy.  He always loved basketball as a kid but it was in fact one of his sisters who was the gifted baller of the family. Not easily swayed from his convictions Dennis set out to play some ball himself but rejection seemed to plague him. He was too short to make the high school team so he was cut. He hung up the idea of basketball and worked as a janitor at an airport before he tried his hand at basketball again. Since crazy things do happen, Dennis hit a growth spurt late in the game and enrolled in a county college where he eventually transferred to Southeastern Oklahoma State where he made his mark and eventually found his way to the NBA.

In 2005 Dennis was the first male and the first sports star to ever pose nude for PETA’s Anti-Fur Campaign. Over the years he tells the press that furriers have pushed free furs on him and he has always declined. He even went as far as to mention that he was embarrassed when his ex-wife used to wear fur. That is why we like Dennis here at Veggie Fitness because he calls it like he sees it and he is not afraid to speak his mind. Plus athleticism with a dash of compassion is hard to beat 😉

So here is a big up to Mr. Rodman for being a fashionably, compassionate, world-class athlete.

Ringo Starr: Live at Soundstage

Ringo Starr. Legendary Drummer. Longtime Vegetarian.

Fortunately for me, I grew up listening to The Beatles. I remember hearing the White Album and being blown away and gloriously watching Yellow Submarine as a child. Once it was my turn to start my cd collection, my father hooked me up with Abbey Road and Sargent Peppers. The rest is history since my best friend was a HUGE Beatles fan, we proceeded discovered their catalog together. We also shared a crush on the same Beatle. Ringo. We often discussed why we chose him, when Paul and John were the ones to ‘love’. Maybe it was because he was the drummer and drummers are just cool? Maybe it was because he sang ‘Yellow Submarine’ and that song was a childhood favorite of ours? Who knows. After much thought we settled on the fact that we liked him the best because to us he was the cutest. After all we are simple girls 😉

Not the most famous vegetarian of the band, we will leave that title to Sir Paul but a vegetarian none the less. Ringo made the decision to go veg after he kept suffering from stomach issues. Many things were tried, nothing worked so he gave up the meat and never looked back. Ringo is not alone in this situation, Billy Idol also is a vegetarian due to stomach issues. Both lost the meat and lost the issues. How sweet it is.

This Hall Of Fame rocker still releases records and still tours. He is currently working on his next album and just released a song for the Buddy Holly tribute record. When he is not touring the world being a rock star vegetarian and father of 3, you can find him at one of his homes in L.A., Surrey or  Monte Carlo. Or on Thomas The Tank Engine re-runs or VHS 😉

So here is a big up to Mr. Starr for being the ultimate vegetarian Rock Starr.

The Legendary Gza With The Legendary Rza Who Is Also A Vegetarian.

My heart belongs to hip hop. Ever since the late 80’s hip hop worked its way into my being and has held one of the top spots since then. I personally don’t like the garbage on the radio today, this is not hip hop. This is…noise. One of the most prolific hip hop albums of all times is 1995’s ‘Liquid Swords’ by Gza. I dare you to find a more perfectly produced hip hop album. When that record dropped it just blew our minds, ‘Off The Hook’ was the exact term I used the first time I heard the title track ‘Liquid Swords’. It literally peeled back my gourd and still does when I bump it. But at this point in time what’s blowing my mind is the fact that the almighty Gza is a VEGETARIAN. WHAT?!? You all have no idea how happy it makes me when I find out the people I admire the most in the world are veg heads 🙂

The Gza’s road to vegetarianism was a long time coming. He stopped eating pork in 1977. Beef in 1989 and by 1996 he stopped eating anything dead. Being aware and well read, Gza knows that meat is highly contaminated and full of hormones and toxins. He wants none of that in his body. He thinks it was a piece of chicken that turned him off meat forever and he seems to have no regrets about it. Since 1996 he has gone through phases where he also stopped eating dairy, he currently only eats cheese sometimes and it has to be organic and locally sourced. He has also taken a more raw approach to eating which is why he now loves visiting L.A. because there are so many raw food restaurants. And although he stopped eating meat rather young he wishes he was raised a vegetarian and that he never ate meat. He believes that being vegetarian is not only the best thing for your health but for your conscious and your morals. We have to agree with you on all 3 points, G. Thai and Indian top Gza’s list of his favorite foods and he is also not afraid to eat some raw pizza 😉

Not one to shy away from reality, Gza has been known to play DVD’s for his friends that shine a not so positive light on meat-eating and all it entails. So far it has worked because 4 of his fellow Clan members are vegetarian, none of them eat pork and he has heads asking him to get him ‘those DVDs’. I honestly didn’t need anymore reasons to love Gza but I guess I got them anyway.

So here is a big ups from Veggie Fitness to Gza, if you dare to ‘scratch underneath the surface’ you never know what you will find. Who would have ever thought members of the Wu Tang Clan rolled out veg style???

Christina Applegate at the 66th Golden Globes ...

Image via Wikipedia

I LOVE Christina Applegate, just adore her. Ever since Married With Children and Don’t Tell Mom…I have just thought she was the coolest chick ever. So needless to say, when I found out she was a long time vegetarian, my heart skipped a beat 😉 Raised by her actress mom, Applegate has been in the biz since she was a child and a vegetarian since she was a teen. Her moment of clarity came while eating lunch on the set of Married With Children at age 15. They served her some type of meat and she looked down and realized that was blood on her plate, right then she knew she could never eat something that had once been alive.

After successfully kicking breast cancer in the butt, Christina got pregnant with her first child, a daughter she named Sadie. Christina credits her strong recovery and ability to conceive a child after all that stress to her healthy diet. She works in partnership with PETA on their ‘Anti-Fur’ Campagne and she has done many interviews with doctors discussing her healthy lifestyle. She loves to stay active, does yoga and has many dogs, Christina feels that leading a life of peace and compassion is the way to go.

So this is a big up from Veggie Fitness to Ms. Applegate, much health and happiness to you and your baby daughter 😉
