Restaurant Review: Pomegranate Cafe.

7 Apr

The Pomegranate Cafe is an adorable, mother and daughter run joint located in the Phoenix, Arizona area. This establishment offers a little bit of everything from fresh pressed juices and elixirs to delicious shakes, salads and wraps. They serve brunch, lunch and dinner and are only closed on Mondays.

My personal experience at Pomegranate Cafe was overwhelmingly positive. First off, the place is laid back, clean, open and welcoming. It is an easy place to have a quick bite orΒ  a good place to sit and read the paper over a fresh pressed juice. The employees are all friendly and seem to be enjoying their job, this is ultimately reflected in the service they provide, which is top notch. Now when it comes to the food, Pomegranate Cafe does not disappoint. I tried several things while visiting and liked them all, a salad, a wrap and an amazing mint chocolate vegan shake to boot.

Pomegranate Cafe is a vegan restaurant but they do offer some things in vegetarian form if you ask. They offer lots of raw and gluten-free options and even if something is not gluten-free just ask and they maybe able to make it happen. And last but not least they use local, organic produce to create their amazingly healthy dishes. This place is the real deal, real food made with love πŸ™‚

Tasty Treats Review: Vegan Danish Bakery.

8 Mar

‘We’re Vegan, We’re Danish and we Bake!’ Is the motto of this little gem of a shop in Thornhill, Ontario. Located about 20 minutes from downtown Toronto, what this bakery offers is unlike anything you will ever experience. Period. I had planned on writing this sooner but I have been putting it off because I honestly don’t know where to start lol. Ok. Maybe with the chocolate drizzled oatmeal cookies we ate 8 of? Or the insane chocolate chocolate chip cupcake topped with a whipped coconut icing? Gosh. That place is amazing and I am not the only one to think so. We found it on HappyCow.Com and the reviews on there were glowing so we just had to make the drive from our downtown hotel.

If you like danish then this place will be a slice of heaven for you. The danish. OMG. I mean really? It is unfairly good, so good we made it right to the front of the front door before we started to devour them. I had never had a danish that tasted like that before, it was perfection, I wish we got more but there was so much we wanted to try, we had to pick and choose. Besides danish and cupcakes and cookies there were also these delicious looking loaves of bread and lovely little truffles.

This bakery is just a small store front, there are no seats and I don’t think there is a bathroom. They also see Daiya cheeses, vegan sour cream, vegan cream cheese, soy milk, soy yogurt and some other mock meats. As well as Ami Dog and cat foods. This is really great for those of you who lead the veg life in that area, its a total one stop vegan shop in a way. For those of us who are not lucky enough to live by the Vegan Danish Bakery, if you ever find yourself visiting the Toronto area or even passing through you must stop or take a detour to stop at this place. A true gem, one of a kind πŸ™‚

Restaurant Review: Pure City.

14 Feb

Pure City Vegetarian Restaurant is located in the small Hudson Valley New York town of Pine Bush. Pine Bush is really a small town and to be honest one of the last places I would have even imagined to find a vegetarian restaurant. To make it even cooler, Pure City is located right next to a health foods store which carries tons of vegan and vegetarian goodies, foods and supplies. It’s like a two-for-one πŸ™‚

Anyways, I am a huge fan of Pure City and every time we go to visit Sandy (aka Mom) I’m like ‘Can we eat a Pure City?’ I’m sure its annoying but I can’t help it, their food is sooo darn good. Every time I have eaten there I have loved it, everything is fresh down to the homemade ketchup. The menu includes lots of Chinese and Asian inspired dishes, as well as veggie burgers, fries, nuggets and salads. They also have mochi for dessert and to be honest the mochi is the bomb so be sure to save some room for those frozen bundles of vegan goodness. I personally could eat their Sweet and Sour ‘Chicken’ every time I am there and about 90% of the time I do. It is so good, one of the best versions of Sweet and Sour I have had and trust me I have tried many different versions from North American to Europe.

Pure City is open Tuesday-Thursday from 11am-10pm. Friday and Saturday from 11am-11pm. Closed Sunday and Monday. They are located at 100 Main St. Pine Bush, New York and you can contact them at: 845.744.8888/2153. Regardless of what you order at Pure City you can rest assure that you meal will be 100% vegan with no cholesterol, no saturated fat and low in sodium. The service will be great and you will leave happy, they are not rated ‘The Best Of Hudson Valley’ for nothing πŸ˜‰

Restaurant Review: Chocolatree Organic Oasis.

19 Dec

Chocolatree Organic Oasis is this little gem of a store/restaurant in Sedona, Arizona. Set up in what seems to have once been a private home, its quaint, cute and very welcoming. Everything they offer is vegan and when I was there I believe most of the menu was raw food. I do know that the food was awesome. Don’t be freaked out by the word ‘raw’ at this place, they do it just right and give you so many options from sandwiches to smoothies.

You can sit inside or out in their garden where they grow the food you are eating, if the weather permits. The day we were there it was a bit chilly so we sat inside. I had some amazing raw sandwich with sprouts on sprouted grain bread, it was simple and tasty just the way I like my food. Everything that was tried was enjoyed, we actually wanted to stop there again before we left but time did not permit us to do so.

Besides being a restaurant Chocolatree is also home to L.O.V.E Chocolate Company so you can pick and choose your own selection of vegan bon bons, brownies and other treats before you leave. There are also tons of snacks to buy from kale chips to crackers they have something you will love to snack on there. They also have a ‘store’ towards the back of the restaurant with vegan gifts including jewelry, wine and other nick nacks.

So if you are every in Sedona, after you get over the inital shocking beauty of it all, head over to Chocolatree Organic Oasis for a healthy and vibrant breakfast lunch, dinner or snack. It’s food and an exerience you should not miss while you are in town πŸ™‚

Restaurant Review: Simple Joy Vegetarian Cuisine.

8 Nov

When I am in Hawaii it always seems to be so easy to eat vegetarian. People there are very into health and whole foods so it is always a pleasure shopping for food and dining out. During my last trip to O’ahu we stopped by Simple Joy which is an all vegetarian, all the time restaurant that sits on the outskirts of Waikiki in Honolulu. They are open 7 days a week for both lunch and dinner.

We stopped by for dinner on a Thursday evening and it was not crowded but there was people there, including a table with a vegetarian child. She was about 8 years old and I over heard her talking about being vegetarian and it was really cute. She seemed so smart and well-informed. Anyway, Simple Joy is small, clean and quite and the staff was friendly and laid back as most Hawaiians tend to be. The menu is quite extensive and spans continents such as Asia, Europe and North America. Every dish they offer is vegan, this means none of their cheeses are dairy based so vegans can feel free to chow down on Eggplant Parmigiana or a Quesadilla with no worries.

I decided to try the veggie burger since that was what I was in the mood for. I added some baked potato fries and some crispy spring rolls and fried tofu for appetizers. The vegetables clay pot sensation was also tried and loved and so was the Thai iced tea. My overall experience at Simple Joy was great, I found the portions to be well sized and reasonably priced. The service was great as was the atmosphere. I would definitely go back next time I am on the island πŸ™‚

Tasty Treats Review: Sweet & Sara.

16 Oct

Sweet & Sara is ridiculous. I mean lets face it, marshmallows maybe one of the best snacks ever. As any vegetarian or vegan knows they are simply not allowed due to the fact they have gelatin in them. Not to mention most are made of junk anyways. But not Sweet & Sara. No junk and no gelatin, just pure, natural, sugary goodness. I came across my package of marshmallows at Whole Foods last week, that was the first time I saw them so I had to grab them because their vegan treats seem to fly off the shelves. Since I cannot stop at one thing I grabbed a vegan smores by Sweet & Sara too. I figured I would save the marshmallows till I got home and enjoy the vegan smores after my lunch of salad and sesame tofu. And that is precisely what I did πŸ˜‰

Made by hand, in small batches, Sweet & Sara does not use any big machines to make their goodies, just regular everyday people. All of their smores are weighed out and precisely covered in rich dark chocolate. Everything is made in small batches daily at their factory in Long Island City, Queens. Run by Sara herself, this marshmallow recipe is her very own that she created all by herself. Having been a vegetarian for quite sometime she was sick of not being able to enjoy the sugary puffed goodness known as marshmallows. So she set out on a quest and her mission has been accomplished.

I am not the only one who thinks Sweet & Sara is on to something delicious. They have been awarded the ‘Veggie Award 2010’ by VegNews Magazine, they have been featured on Rachel Ray and the Food Network as well as Time Out Magazine. If you are every in New York City, don’t hesitate to make an appointment to stop by their factory which is a simple ride on the 7 train to Queens. You can also buy them on-line, at tons of Whole Foods across the country and at local health food stores. However you choose to get them, just get them πŸ™‚

It Doesn’t Get Much Sweeter Then This.

Restaurant Review: New Harmony Vegetarians Restaurant.

4 Oct

I got such a kick from New Harmony because it is literally a Chinese food restaurant. Everything is the typical Chinese food situation from the menus to the actual restaurant. I had been looking for a place like this since I became vegetarian and of course they did not disappoint. There is just something special about being able to get ANYTHING you want in vegetarian form, that is why I love New Harmony so much. They took everything from your local Chinese food restaurant and shape-shifted it into vegetarian form.

This joint is located in Philly and if you are lucky enough to live close by, they offer free delivery with $20 or more purchased. I’m so friggin jealous about that you have no idea. Where I am currently at there are no vegetarian delivery options, the Thai place offers vegetarian stuff but it is not a vegetarian restaurant. Know what I mean? As soon as I live in delivery distance of a vegetarian restaurant, it’s so on. Since New Harmony’s menu is the same as what I used to order from in my carnie days I just stuck with what I loved back then. Some General Tao’s and Sweet and Sour Chicken. We lucked out and hit the dinner special which was top-notch, it came with rice, spring rolls and some soup. All for some ridiculously cheap price just like Chinese take out.

The portions were HUGE, we could have totally ordered less but when we go out to eat we never know if and when we will make it back to most of these places so we just stuff our faces till our hearts content and/or stomachs plead. There are tons and tons of mock meats on New Harmony’s menu. They have beef, pork and chicken options which are made from Wheat Gluten and some with rice powder. Pork and chicken made from soy and seafood made from tarro, seaweed and rice powder. They way they make these meat alternatives these days is crazy and as you see not everything is soy based and what this stuff is made from is all good for you. On of being 100% vegan, New Harmony is also certified Kosher.
