Bye Bye St. Ives.

This is a terribly sad post for me to blog. I am a hard-core St. Ives product user. I use it all from body lotion to face scrubs, I cannot imagine my beauty routine without their products. But it looks as if I am going to have to make a change because St. Ives has been bought by Unilever and Unilever tests on animals 😦

Someone majorly dropped the ball on this move, or perhaps they simply didn’t care. Either way a whole slew of people are going to have to stop buying St. Ives products because they are no longer in line with the vegan ethic of not buying things that are tested on animals. This move was made a couple of years back but it seems as if St. Ives is just getting around to their new packaging which no longer includes, ‘Not Tested On Animals’ or ‘No Animal Ingredients.’

To add insult to injury, Unilever has also take it upon themselves to change the classic formulas we all came to love. For example. my favorite coconut/orchid body lotion formula has been changed, a down grade at that and they have also decided to add the preservative/chemical BHT to the end of the ingredients list. I will not even eat anything with BHT in it, why the hell would I rub it all over my skin, the largest organ on my body? And what about the classic apricot face scrub? Yeah well the one I use, now has lanolin in it, which comes from sheep’s wool which makes it not vegan.

So not only are St. Ives products now tested on animals but they also contain chemicals and animal ingredients. 3 strikes and you are OUT. But what did anyone really expect from Unilever? That company is a horrible, animal testing, chemical making machine, it’s just too bad they had to take St. Ives down with them.

Thank you so much for the info! I would not have known and there is already so much misrepresentation in major corps.

I know, it sucks. I knew this was coming but I NEVER expected them to change the formulas and start testing on animals.
Unilever is a very evil company, they mess up every product they buy. I am sad about this, I feel awful for the animals ;(

This makes me so sad. It is so hard to find affordable products that are not tested on animals. I am disappointed in St. Ives. I will definitely no longer buy their products. Stupid Unilever!

I know. The affordability of St Ives was second to none. Paying 10-15 dollars for a bottle of body lotion is just not realistic to most people. St Ives made cruelty free products affordable and Unilever should be ashamed. Though I am sure they do not care 😦

I also use St. Ives and have touched on this issue on my blog as well. However, St. Ives was manufactured by Alberto-Culver which was bought by Unilever in 2010. Where did you see any recent information about this?

It was bought in 2010 but they just got around to changing their packaging now.
Alberto-Culver is also owned by Unilever, they got bought out in 2011 for nearly 4 billion.

I have also touched on this subject on my blog and am an avid St. Ives user. However, from all research I have done, St. Ives was manufactured by Alberto-Culver which was purchased by Unilever in 2010. Where did you find any recent information on this topic?

This is a pretty hot topic on the web right now. Lots of people are upset.
Personally, I just put 2 and 2 together. I started seeing the Unilever logo on St. Ives packaging, the the not tested on animals disappeared and was replaced with ‘dermatologist tested’ then I saw animal by products (Lanolin) in the apricot face scrub as well. Then I realized my time with St. Ives was up.
Unilever does this, they buy BIG companies and products then change them for the worst. They also own Ben and Jerry’s, Tre Semme, Bryers Ice Cream and Lipton Tea just to name a few. They test on animals and refuse to stop, their ‘ethical’ track record is horrid plus they use chemicals in everything.
I already stayed away from anything Unilever before this happened, that is how awful they are but now I am almost at a loss. Spending $10 a bottle for body lotion is not that cool, St Ives used to provide the alternative.

Thanks for the update! I need to find a replacement. It was SO affordable.

Has anyone found any good replacements yet?
