Just My Thoughts: The Obesity, Depression Connection.

5 Oct

As both obesity and depression reach all time highs in America, one must stop to think, ‘is there a connection?’ I have always thought so but not until an obese friend of mind solidified it, did I realize the deadly effects of depression and how easily they can lead to obesity.

Everyone has a story, my friend was a big kid born to obese parents, add the loneliness of being an only child to the mix and boom, food became comfort. Food became his friend and his struggle with obesity that started as a teen, is now still controlling his life in his 40’s. It is not an easy roller coaster to get off of and I applaud people for even trying, seriously.

Food is addicting, especially the types of food people turn to for a crutch. The tasty junk food with all the chemicals that mess with our brains and our emotions, making us want more and more. Before we know it, clothes don’t fit and we are bigger. Someone who is already struggling with food issues will not snap out of it, they will beat themselves up for ‘failing’, most likely for the umpteenth time. They will in turn seek comfort from food and the cycle continues. Our societies pressure on being thin as we only get bigger as a whole, I am sure does not help either.

One does not know what triggered another’s weight gain, maybe the person is sick, maybe the suffered a great tragedy or maybe they are just lazy, which can also just be depression. Who knows. What I do know is that they are already aware of it and probably a bit depressed over it. They have probably fallen ‘victim’ to many weight loss scams and countless other ‘diet’ nonsense. Many have struggled their whole life with their weight.

As we get bigger and get more depressed, we must not fail to lose our sense of compassion. These are trying times in America for a lot of people, hence the spikes of both obesity and depression. No one should want to be obese and no I do not think it should be the new norm. That is a bad norm, that to me means lots of unhappy, unhealthy people.

So that is my thought of the day. I applaud everyone who has taken control of their health, without your health everything in your life will suffer. Depression can be lessened with a proper diet and daily exercise, as can obesity and all its ugly side effects. I encourage everyone to take steps to better health everyday that way we can recover both physically and emotionally as a whole 🙂
