Lower Your Blood Pressure With These Foods.

27 Nov

High blood pressure is a common occurrence in America, ask around and I am sure you will find a lot of people who you know on medication for high blood pressure. High blood pressure can lead to other serious aliments such as heart attacks and clogged arteries. The good news is a plant based diet can help prevent you from ever getting high blood pressure and even if you currently have high blood pressure you can still lower it naturally with these 6 foods.

6 Foods To Lower Your Blood Pressure.

1- Whole Grain Oats.

Haferflocken

Good news for all you carb lovers, whole grain oats such as steel cut oats with their combination of fiber and magnesium have been shown lower your blood pressure. In a recent study, over 12 weeks people with hypertension were asked to eat 1 bowl of oatmeal everyday and at the end of the12 weeks almost 75% of participants were able to significantly cut their blood pressure medications and some even cut them in half. The rest of the participants all cited a significant drop in their blood pressure. Score one for the oats.

2- Black Beans.

The protein to fiber ratio in black beans is off the chain allowing it to work wonders on those with high blood pressure. Black beans manage to help regulate your blood sugar and lower your blood cholesterol levels both help you lower your blood pressure. Black beans are also packed with folate, 1 cup of black beans has almost 300 micrograms of folate which takes you very close to the 400 micrograms a day quota which is recommended. Try trading black beans for beef in your tacos, with the cumin and chili spices you will never miss the meat. Plus beef is bad for you and black beans are not.

3- Berries.

Berries are on every single ‘How To Live Healthy and Disease Free List’ I have ever come across. Packed with fiber, berries such as strawberries, blueberries and raspberries are also an amazing source of antioxidants. Fiber and Vitamin C have both been shown to help lower your blood pressure and we all know berries have those categories covered. All you need to do is eat 1 cup of berries, fresh or frozen, everyday and you will be on your way to lower blood pressure and better skin. Just to name a couple of their benefits.

4- Celery.

I actually read an article that said celery is a ‘waste of a vegetable’. I got pretty offended because that is not the truth at all. Celery is the bomb. Doctors who study Chinese Medicine have been recommending celery to their patients with high blood pressure for over 100 years now and they have seen great success with it. Celery also lowers blood pressure in animals too so it is not just for us humans. The phtyochemicals in celery help to relax the muscle tissue that line our artery walls which allows increased blood flow which ultimately gives you lower blood pressure. Eating 4 stalks a day is the reccomended amount you will need to eat to see results.

5- Broccoli.

Broccoli contains lots of fiber, calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin c. All of those nutrients have been shown to help lower your blood pressure. Broccoli basically has the ‘Lower Your Blood Pressure’ game on lock so feel free to eat it all day, everyday. The way you eat it is up to you because anyway you cook it broccoli still holds onto it’s positive properties. If you are not into broccoli, I am not, then consider trowing the stems into the blender and making a green drink with it. That way taste and texture are not issues.

6- Low Fat Dairy.

Dairy is a slippery slope for me to talk about so as a disclaimer I will say, seek out ‘ethical’ dairy please. Look for milk, cheese and yogurts that are not made from cows who have been treated with growth hormone. Also be sure the rennet is vegetable based and the yogurts do not contain gelatin. With all that said, low fat dairy has been shown to prevent hypertension and people who eat 2-3 servings of low fat dairy daily have systolic blood pressure that is almost 3 points lower then those who only eat half a serving of dairy per day. Always go for Greek yogurt, the rest is usually just a waste of time and calories.
