Getting B12 Is No Sweat, Just Supplement.

If you are a vegetarian or vegan I am sure you have been asked a million times about B12. Before I even became vegetarian I tried to learn about B12 because I was scared about lacking in it and having people say unnecessary things like ‘I Told You So.’ What I came to find out is that yes, B12 is super important and that you don’t have to be a vegetarian or vegan to be lacking in it. With the way people eat these days, vitamin deficiency is as common as having brown hair, so we all need to watch to make sure we are eating the proper amount of vitamins and minerals each and everyday.

Since most B12 is found in nasty things like liver and beef, vegans will have a hard time getting their daily quota. This is really not that big of a deal if you take a supplement. Ovo Lacto vegetarians can get some B12 from dairy products such as milk and cheese and fortified cereals and juices also contain B12. The reason B12 is stressed so much is because it plays such a crucial function in our bodies, especially in our brains. B12 is involved in the metabolism of every cell in the body, it affects DNA synthesis and fatty acid synthesis, it also aids in energy production. B12 is the largest most structurally complicated vitamin and it is only consumed by cows through bacteria. B12 is does not naturally occur in the meat/flesh of animals.

Being low on B12 can cause you serious issues such as severe and permanent damage to the brain and nervous system. Extreme cases also include psychosis and mania. Even if your levels are only a bit low you may feel fatigued, depressed or suffer from poor memory. As a vegan or vegetarian is VERY important to know your body and to be able to know when you are feeling sluggish or down. This goes for meat eaters too since the amount of B12 will vary from animal to animal. If you feel you maybe lacking, simply take a supplement. I try to get as much B12 as I can from things like protein bars and Powerade (believe it or not) but I still supplement because I do not like leaving anything to chance when it comes to my health.

Leading a healthy life as a vegan or vegetarian is super easy. So we have to supplement a few things, everyone does, even meat eaters supplement with things like fiber and Vitamin C. Those are things the average veg head gets more than enough of so at the end of the day, it all evens out. It is no more work being a vegetarian as opposed to a meat eater. An adjustment, yes. Hard work,no. Try it, you may like it 😉
